Golf in New Hampshire

New Hampshire golf is lakes, granite, and a season that makes every round count. Courses around Lake Winnipesaukee, Portsmouth Country Club on the seacoast, Bretwood in Keene, and mountain tracks tied to ski resorts give the state more variety than its Tour-less calendar suggests. This is New England club golf: member-owned, summer-peaked, and socially tied to cottages and prep-school calendars as much as to corporate scrambles.

There is no PGA Tour event, and the championship story is amateur and USGA sectional. Players cross into Massachusetts and Maine as readily as they stay home. The culture is Yankee and recreational—league nights, hospital fundraisers, and foliage-season golf that can be the most beautiful and the most unpredictable week of the year. Granite ledges and tree-lined holes punish the spray; wind on the lakes is a second architect.

Peak season is short. New Hampshire's local signature is a lakeside round in July with the White Mountains on the horizon, or a seacoast walk when the tourists are still in the shops. Visiting golfers who treat the state as a drive-through between Boston and Maine miss a dense, proud club culture that has been playing the same holes for generations.
